Rodin: Evolution of a Genius

Caroline Tucker

Art lovers! Come one, come
all and prepare to experience
firsthand the works of an artist
considered to be the father
of modern sculpture. The Virginia
Museum of Fine Arts recently
displayed 200 pieces created by the
most celebrated sculptor of the
19 and early 20 centuries: Auguste Rodin.
The exhibition examines Rodin’s
technique, materials, models
and assistants and explores the
working process behind his most
famous works.
The most notable works displayed
include “The Thinker,” “The Gates
of Hell,” “Eternal Springtime”
and “Large Hand of Pianist” were
a few of the sculptures displayed
at VMFA. “The Gates of Hell”
was a centerpiece of the collection.
It is a monumental sculpture that
depicts a scene from “The Inferno,”
the first section of Dante Alighieri’s
“Divine Comedy.”
